Can a 32 Inch Walk-In Tub Fit Through a 32 Inch Doorway?

Updated September 2026

Not reliably, no. The doorway has to be wider than the tub's actual width, so a tub that measures a full 32 inches across needs an opening that clears more than 32 inches, measured at the tightest point with the door stops and trim in place. Before you rule a model in or out, check the actual size printed on its spec sheet rather than the rounded name, as explained in What Is Nominal Size vs Actual Size on a Walk-In Tub?.

Actual Width Is the Number the Doorway Must Clear

Every Ella spec sheet carries two sizes. The shipping size is the crated dimension, and it is used to plan the delivery path to the house. The actual size is what the shell measures, and it is the figure for the doorways and hallways the tub itself must pass, because the crate can be opened outside and the tub carried in by its frame. Crates are often wider than the tub inside them: the Elite ships at 32 x 54 x 50 inches, yet the tub itself is 30 inches wide. The measuring checklist states the rule plainly for that model: the Elite's actual size is 30 x 52 x 35 inches, so its passage must be wider than 30 inches. The same logic applies to a 32 inch tub and a 32 inch door. Imperial figures are the authoritative ones, so work in inches and leave the metric conversions aside.

Which Ella Tub Is 32 Inches Wide

The Monaco is 32 inches wide and 52 inches long. It shares its door, controls and jetting with the Capri, which is 30 inches wide and 52 inches long, so the 2 inch difference in width is the real distinction between them. One customer found that the Monaco would not pass through their bathroom doorway and moved to the Capri for that reason alone, keeping the same soaking depth and seat height. The full comparison is in Monaco vs. Capri: What Actually Differs Between Ella's Two Outward-Swing 52-Inch Tubs. Remember that the Monaco's outward-swing door opens into the room, so allow clearance in front of the tub once it is in place.

Measure the Whole Path, Not Just One Door

The bathroom door is rarely the only tight spot. Measure the front door, each hallway, every interior doorway and each corner the tub must pivot through, writing every figure in inches at the tightest point. The Printable Pre-Install Measuring Checklist for a Walk-In Tub has a line for each of those measurements as well as the alcove itself. Share both sets of numbers with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 before you settle on a model. If the alcove is also close to the tub's length, read Will a 60 Inch Tub Fit a 60 Inch Alcove? Stud Walls, Finished Walls and Doorway Clearance, which covers the difference between stud-to-stud and finished openings.

Narrower Models to Compare

  • Capri: 30 inches wide by 52 inches long, the same design as the Monaco.
  • Elite: actual size 30 x 52 x 35 inches.
  • Standard: actual size 29 5/8 x 52 3/4 x 37.5 inches.
  • Transfer30: actual width 29 1/4 inches.
  • Flow: actual size 28 x 48 x 36.5 inches, Ella's compact space-saver model.
  • Petite: actual size 27.5 x 52 x 35 inches, nominally 28x52.

Left-hand and right-hand versions of any model share the same measurements, mirrored, so the door side does not change the width the doorway must clear.

Common Questions

Does the shipping size or the actual size matter for the doorway?
The actual size. The shipping size is the crate, which can be opened outside so the tub is carried in by its frame. Use the shipping size only to plan the delivery route to the house, and use the actual width from the spec sheet for every doorway and hallway the tub itself must pass.
Will the Monaco fit through a 32 inch doorway?
The Monaco is 32 inches wide, and the passage must be wider than the tub, so a 32 inch opening is not enough. One customer in exactly that situation moved to the 30 inch wide Capri, which shares the Monaco's design, soaking depth and seat height. Measure at the tightest point and share the figure with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850.
Which walk-in tubs fit through a 30 inch doorway?
Models narrower than 30 inches include the Standard at 29 5/8 inches, the Transfer30 at 29 1/4 inches, the Flow at 28 inches and the Petite at 27.5 inches. The Elite and the Capri measure a full 30 inches wide, so they need an opening wider than 30 inches. Confirm every model against the actual size on its spec sheet.
How do I measure a doorway for a walk-in tub?
Measure the clear width in inches at the tightest point, with the door stops and trim in place. Do the same for the front door, each hallway, every interior door and each corner the tub must pivot through. Compare those figures with the actual width of the tub, not the rounded model name.
Does a left-hand or right-hand door change the tub's width?
No. Left-hand and right-hand versions of any Ella model share the same measurements, mirrored. The door side changes where the door and drains sit, not the width the doorway must clear.
