so what makes a walk-in bathtub a walk-in bathtub a door um let's talk about doors door construction this is always a hot topic i mean you're you're changing from a standard bathtub to a walk-in bathtub so the door on your bathtub should be of the utmost importance our bathtubs let's walk through our doors one our bathtub has an integrated stainless steel jam the seal on the door itself is also integrated into the stainless steel jamb our door is not screwed into any lumber there is no wood holding this jam and the door in place it's solid stainless steel the door itself one really important feature is that it easily lifts off this door probably weighs 30 pounds but it easily lifts off the hinges on the door are welded into the jamb there are no little screws there's no there's no potential for failure this is a stainless steel door stainless steel hinges stainless steel jam huge oversized lifetime door seal this is how i want my doors built if i'm going to put a tub into your home i want it to be the most robust over built door on the market our door handle is designed nice and long why is it nice and long just like a torque bar this makes it that much easier no matter what your mobility restrictions are arthritis carpal tunnel it doesn't matter this door is nice and easy to seal it clicks into place so you know when you've gotten it sealed one thing i'll do on all the doors so you can get an idea of the robust quality of the doors just like if i was kicking the tires at a furniture store i kind of want to feel how solid this door is this is a solid rock-solid 30-pound door on a stainless steel jamb that door is built for lot if we go over to tub number one here we'll do the same sound test kick the tires it's a hollow plastic door okay there's not much to write home about with a plastic door there's a seam that goes right down this door so this is two pieces molded together you can't actually see it but there's a hole drilled on the bottom of this door it's to drain out the water when water ends up filling up in your door from the different penetrations that are made to screw the hinges to this door this door is held on by a piano hinge there's no removing this door the seal is not bad on this door now this is a nice integrated door seal i don't like it as much as ours but it's a pretty darn good seal we can see a couple things about this door handle one it's very short you're not going to get much leverage on this handle but when you do go to seal the door you need to hold it closed and it's a tapered shim glued to the door as you push this handle down you have to go till it stops but there is no click no locking mechanism nothing holding this door closed other than some friction between the handle and this steel shim this door for me it didn't cut it this is this is this this is a door that's going to need service at some point this is your hardware store bathtub this bathtub if we look at the hinges they are held on by two little screws in each hinge look at those little screws this is holding back this door at any potential for water leakage and then if we come to an inside view of the hinge what are these these are little machine bolts with little machine nuts going right through the bathtub itself and these actually don't even have silicone but what holds the water back from this penetration a thin layer of silicone between the hinge and the door itself these bathtubs we installed plenty of them and the largest thing largest service issue we had with these tubs was these hinges loosely they would loosen they would start clicking when you closed them and they would start leaking if you take a look at the handle on this bathtub i mean i compare this handle to something off of a kid's toy i mean it's loose it's wobbling around that's the idea that's not that we intentionally loosened it when you close it on the door it snugs up but the overall quality fit and finish of this door handle it's pretty awful again if we do the tap test on this door you can actually see the seam covered up with the seam binder on the door again we have a two-piece plastic door that's basically just glued together and that's your walk-in bathtub door door seal on this door is definitely at the bottom of the list it's a bulb seal that you would use on any sort of appliance and it's siliconed onto the jamb of the bathtub this door seal litter i can just peel it off this was another large service item on these bathtubs this is another one of our big competitors national competitor let's just compare the doors let's see what this one's all about same thing we've got a two piece plastic door uh we've got the thinnest and without a doubt i mean this is competing with tub number two for the worst handle super small super low quality the finish on this handle will come off this is just a chrome plated finish and this is notorious for flaking off door seal glued on it's got an oversized bulb seal this time attached to the door instead of the jamb what i don't like the most about this bathtub though is that there is a drain integrated into the bathtub and what does this drain do it catches all the water that leaks out of the door they actually have so many leaks that they had to integrate in a door drain which then ties into your plumbing to catch all the leaks that come out of this bathtub for us as an installer as a dealer i don't want bathtubs that are going to be leaking we want no service we want perfect perfect week free lifetime happy customers door grains to catch weeks that doesn't make for a happy customer
