Both directions exist in the Ella lineup, and neither one is the default. Inward-swing doors are on the Elite, Petite, Royal, Deluxe, Ultimate, Companion, Escape, Standard, Standard60, Zen, Zen60, Flow, Ultra, LayDown60 and LayDown72, while outward-swing doors are on the Capri, Monaco, Front Entry, Mobile, Lounger, Shak, Big4One, Tub4Two, Big4Two and the five Transfer models. The swing comes with the model and the doors are not interchangeable, so choosing an outward door really does mean choosing one of those models, as Which Door Does My Ella Tub Have? lays out style by style.

The table shows why the question has two halves. Inward doors are the space savers: they need no floor in front of the tub, so they suit small bathrooms and a toilet that sits close. Outward doors leave more room inside the tub and are the easiest way in, especially from a wheelchair, but they need clear floor in the arc of the door. The door styles video walks through the three constructions and states the two clearance figures, 21 inches for the U-shape and 36.5 inches for the L-shape, and the short outswing video makes the entry point: outward doors require no knee clearance. What the table cannot do is let you mix the columns. The Royal does not come with an outward door, and the Capri does not come with a stainless inward one.
Why the Swing Is a Model Choice Rather Than an Option
Every stainless steel door swings inward, and there is no outward version of it. Every U-shape and L-shape door swings outward on a gear and shaft latch, and there is no inward version of those. Because the door platform is built into the model, Ella offers pairs instead of a swap: the Monaco is the Royal's outward counterpart at the same size, the Tub4Two is the outward two-seater, and the Transfer family is outward only. The LayDown tubs come only with the glass side door. If you have settled on a shell size and the swing is wrong for your room, look for the counterpart model rather than asking for a different door.
The door side is a separate decision from the swing and is tied to the plumbing. The door and the drains sit on opposite sides of an Ella tub: a right-side door puts the drains on the left and a left-side door puts the drains on the right, with sides taken as you face the tub. Should My Walk-In Tub Door Be on the Left or Right Side? explains how the house drain settles that choice before the swing question comes up.
What an Inward Door Means in the Bathroom and in the Bath
An inward door swings into the tub, so a toilet or vanity beside the tub is never in the way, and when a toilet sits close the team's usual advice is to look at the inward families first. The bather steps in, stands, and closes the door past the knees, so some room inside the tub is needed for that movement. The stainless steel doors and the Ultra's aluminum door lift out for cleaning.
Inward doors also behave differently once the tub is full. The water pressure of a full tub holds the door shut, so even if a bather grabs the handle and lifts it, the door cannot be pulled open against the weight of the water. The routine is to drain completely before reaching for the handle, and the full-tub door guide explains why a lifted handle on an inward door does no harm.
What an Outward Door Means in the Bathroom and in the Bath
An outward door opens away from the tub, so the bather walks or transfers straight onto the seat without lifting a knee over anything, and the warm acrylic surface makes entry and exit easier. The cost is floor space. The U-shape door swings 165 degrees into the room and needs about 21 inches of clearance. The L-shape Transfer door swings 172 degrees and needs about 36.5 inches, and the bathroom layout guide gives its toilet geometry: the long top section of the L is about 36 inches, the lower section near the hinges is about 19 1/2 inches, and the cutout at the bottom sits about 20 to 21 inches above the floor, so the door usually clears a 17 to 19 inch toilet seat if the toilet is far enough from the hinge side. Tall comfort-height toilets can be a problem, so measure yours. A U-shape door that begins 28 3/4 inches from the wall, as on the Lounger, may still clear a nearby toilet, but installers measure first.
The latch is the other difference. Outward doors use a proprietary gear and shaft mechanism, three latches on the U-shape and two on the L-shape, with tapered pins driven into the jamb. The pins retract only when the outside handle is rotated fully back to the open position, so accidental opening is unlikely, but a helper who rotates the handle all the way with the tub full can unlock the door. On the Lounger the outside handle can be removed. The handle itself sits on tabs over the latch mechanism and is held by a single locking bolt under a chrome cover, which is why the broken handle guide starts with reseating and tightening rather than a new door.
Choosing Before You Order
- Locate the house drain. That sets the door side, because the door goes opposite the drains.
- Measure the clear floor in front of that side. Under 21 inches, an inward model is the safer fit. Around 21 inches opens up the U-shape family. The L-shape Transfer door wants about 36.5 inches.
- Note the toilet's height and its distance from the hinge side if an outward door would swing toward it.
- Think about who bathes and who helps. A bather who transfers from a wheelchair gains the most from an outward door; a household where someone might reach for the handle mid-bath may prefer an inward door held shut by the water.
- Confirm the model with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850, because the tub is built with the door style and side you order.
