There is no single best walk-in tub, because the tub that suits you is the one that fits your body, your bathroom and the way you like to bathe. Ella's Bubbles builds a full range of walk-in tubs, and comparing them comes down to seat width, soaking depth, door style and therapy options, all measured against you rather than against a ranking. The method starts with Seat sizes and soaking depth: how to measure yourself for a comfortable fit.
Measure Yourself Before You Compare Tubs
Ella's measuring video shows the method. Sit in a chair facing a wall, in a relaxed position, and take three measurements:
- Your hips while seated. The tub seat must be wider than this number.
- Your shoulder width while seated, so the tub you choose has the proper shoulder room for your body size.
- Your length from head to feet while seated, to gauge the tub length that fits you.
Compare those numbers with the drawings and specifications for each model, and be exact, because different body sizes require different size tubs. Bigger is not automatically better. The extra-large tubs with very long seats are designed for taller bathers, and they can be uncomfortable for an average or shorter person.
The Numbers That Separate One Model from Another
Seat width. Ella seat widths run from 19 inches on the Petite and Transfer26 to 29 inches on the TransferXXL, so your seated hip measurement narrows the field quickly.
Soaking depth. The soaking depth of an Ella walk-in tub is determined by the interior length of the tub, the length of the seat, and the depth from the top of the seat to the overflow drains. That seat-to-overflow figure runs roughly 15 to 18 inches across the mid-size models, and a tall bather with a long torso sits higher in the water than a shorter bather on the same seat.
Length for tall bathers. For a bather around six feet or taller, the models built with long seats and long interiors are the Big4One and the ShaK, and the ShaK is the largest single-seat walk-in tub Ella makes. The details are in What size walk-in tub fits a six-foot-tall person?.
Weight. Ella does not publish a single bather weight limit across the lineup, because the deciding factor is fit. Every shell sits on a rustproof stainless steel frame that carries the load to the floor, so if you can sit comfortably inside the tub, the tub holds you. See What Is the Total Weight Capacity of a Walk-In Tub?.
Door style. The Ultra uses an aluminum-and-glass inward door, the Standard and the Flow use the acrylic inward S-shape door, and models such as the Big4One use an outward-swing U-shape door for a wide, easy entry. The door you can live with depends on the floor space in front of the tub.
Features to Weigh Once the Fit Is Right
The Ultra product tour is a good picture of what the current models offer: an ADA compliant seat height, dual drain technology, three-speed air massage with auto purge, hydro massage with an in-line heater and intensity dial, ozone sterilization, chromatherapy, a heated seat and backrest, and an independent foot massage with its own dedicated pump. Ultra, Standard, Flow and S-Class on Video: Seat Heights, Soaking Depth, Thresholds and the Legacy Line pairs those on-screen figures with the current spec sheets.
The two videos on this page show two of those differences up close. The first explains that an Ella tub with independent foot massage and full body hydro massage uses two separate pumps, one for the seat jets and one for the foot jets, each with its own intensity control dial, so you can run full power to just your feet or to your entire body. The second walks through faucet choices, from the two-piece high-flow set to the five-piece high-flow set and the thermostatic faucet, and explains that each tub is pulled for your order and drilled for the faucet and features you select. Your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 can match your measurements to a model.
