The only Ella walk-in tubs built without a seat are the two LayDown models, the LayDown 30x60 and the LayDown 32x72, which have a flat floor from end to end so you lie back rather than sit upright. The 30x60 stands 21 inches high overall, its side profile drawing carries a 25 3/4 inch height reference at the back, and the 32x72 drawing shows 27 7/8 inches at the back, but the interior side wall measured from the tub floor to the top of the rim is not a published figure for either size. How tall are bathtubs and walk-in tubs, and why does it matter? sets the LayDown's height beside the seated tubs, and this page collects the interior figures that are printed and explains how to get the one that is not.
Two Tubs with No Seat, and Why That Changes the Height Question
Every other Ella walk-in tub is built around a molded seat. You walk through the door, sit at roughly chair height, and the water rises around a seated body, so the tall outside wall of a seated tub, 35 inches on the Petite and the Elite, is there to hold water above the seat. The LayDown tubs drop the seat entirely. Their floor is flat and textured from one end to the other, and the bather reclines the way they would in a conventional bathtub, so the shell does not need a seated-bathing wall. That is why the 30x60 stands only 21 inches high while the seated tubs stand 35 inches or more. On a seated tub the interior figures that matter are seat width, seat height and the depth from the seat to the overflow. On a LayDown none of those figures exist, and the questions become how long and wide the floor is and how deep the water stands when you are lying down.
Published Figures for the Seatless Tubs and Three Seated References
The table uses only figures printed on the current spec drawings or in the published Ella articles. Where a figure is not published, the cell says not listed rather than estimating.
| Model | Width x length x height | Interior floor | Height reference at back of drawing | Asiento | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LayDown 30x60 | 30 in x 60 in x 21 in (overall length 59 3/4 in on the drawing) | 46 in long x 20 in wide | 25 3/4 in | None, flat floor | The lowest Ella tub, built for lying flat in a 60 inch alcove |
| LayDown 32x72 | 32 in wide x 71 3/4 in long on the drawing; height not listed | 22 1/2 in wide; length not listed | 27 7/8 in | None, flat floor | The longer and wider lie-down bath; read its height from its spec sheet |
| Ella Petite | 27.5 in x 52 in x 35 in | no aparece | no aparece | Molded seat | The narrowest seated footprint Ella makes |
| Ella Elite | 30 in x 52 in x 35 in | no aparece | no aparece | Molded seat | Seated bathing in the common 30 by 52 footprint |
| Ella Lounger | 26 in x 60 in x 40 in | no aparece | no aparece | Molded seat | The tallest seated tub, with a rim well above any LayDown |
The split is simple: the two LayDown tubs stand low because they have no seat, and every seated tub stands tall because it does. For the room, the LayDown's rim sits at 21 inches, well below any window sill or wall fixture that a 35 or 40 inch seated tub would hide, so check what will now be visible above the tub. For the bather, the LayDown is entered and used like a conventional bath, while the seated tubs are entered through a door and used sitting upright, and the two drawings carry completely different interior figures as a result.
The Number That Is Not Printed, and the One to Use Instead
The interior side wall, measured from the tub floor straight up to the top of the rim, is not printed for either LayDown size. The 25 3/4 inch and 27 7/8 inch figures are height references at the back of the side profile on each drawing, and the 21 inch figure is the overall exterior height of the 30x60. If your plans depend on the exact floor to rim figure, the team can read it off the spec drawing for you. Ask through your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 or ellasbubbles.com/support, and have the model name ready, because the two sizes differ.
For most bathers the more useful number is soaking depth. The LayDown tubs offer a 15 inch soaking depth compared with about 11 inches in a standard bathtub, so a low exterior does not mean a shallow bath. What Is Soaking Depth on a Walk-In Tub? explains that on a seated tub the depth is measured from the top of the seat to the overflow, roughly 15 1/2 inches on the Elite and Petite and 22 inches on the Big4One, while on a reclining tub the overflow sets how deep the water stands over a flat floor. Fill to the overflow for the deepest soak, and never fill above the center of the drain handle.
Reading the LayDown Drawing: Width, Length and Height
Every Ella tub is published with three outside dimensions, and Walk-In Tub Dimensions Explained shows how to tell them apart. The width is the short side that runs from the front of the tub to the back wall, the length is the long side that runs along the wall, and the height runs from the floor to the top of the rim. For the LayDown 30 by 60 that reads 30 inches wide, 60 inches long and 21 inches high. The drawing prints the overall length as 59 3/4 inches, which is normal rounding in the product name rather than an error, just as a tub sold as 28 inches can measure 27.5 inches on its drawing. Inside, the 30x60 floor is 46 inches long and 20 inches wide, and the 32x72 floor is 22 1/2 inches wide. When a metric figure printed beside an inch figure disagrees with it, the inch figure is the correct one, so measure your alcove, your doorway and your drain location against the inch values.
What a Flat Floor Means Compared with a Footwell
On a seated tub, the footwell is the deep floor section in front of the seat where your feet rest. It holds the foot and calf jets, the lower air jets and the floor drains, and What Is the Footwell on a Walk-In Tub? notes that the molded seat is about 17 inches high and the footwell floor sits 15 to 17 inches below the seat surface, depending on the model. The LayDown has no seat, so there is no footwell step down and no raised seat to measure. The floor is one flat textured surface, 46 inches long on the 30x60, and the bather's lying length is what to compare against it. The seat figures that drive fit on every other Ella tub, seats 19 to 29 inches wide with a surface roughly 17 inches above the tub floor on most models, are explained in How Wide, High and Deep Is a Walk-In Tub Seat and Backrest?, and none of them apply to a LayDown. If a seated bather is who you are shopping for, that article is the one to use; if the bather wants to recline at full length, the interior floor length and the 15 inch soaking depth are the figures that decide the fit.
