Four seated Ella walk-in tubs with published heights come in under 36 inches tall: the Petite, the Elite and the Royal at 35 inches, and the Ultimate at 35 3/4 inches. The two LayDown tubs are far lower at 21 inches at the deck edge, because they are reclining tubs with no seat, and they are the only Ella tubs under 35 inches. Height here means the outside wall of the tub as printed on each model's spec sheet, the same figure explained alongside width and length in What are the standard dimensions of a walk-in tub?.
Why Seated Tubs Stop at 35 Inches
A walk-in tub with a seat has a floor, a molded seat about 17 inches above that floor on most models, and enough wall above the seat for the water to rise to the overflow. On the Elite, Petite and Royal the seat-to-overflow depth is roughly 15 1/2 inches. Those two figures together are why a seated Ella tub cannot be built shorter than 35 inches. The Elite, Petite and Royal are already at that floor, and the Ultimate sits a fraction above it at 35 3/4 inches.
The leveling legs are not a way to lower the tub. They exist to plant every foot evenly on an uneven floor and keep the door aligned and sealed, so they cannot be turned down to shave height off the spec figure. The height printed on the spec sheet is the height to plan around.
The Lowest Ella Tubs, Side by Side
The table uses only figures printed on current spec sheets or in Ella's published guides. Where a figure is not in those sources the cell says not listed. The Deluxe and Lounger are included because they show where the taller seated tubs land.
| Model | Outside height | Footprint, width by length | Design | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LayDown60 | 21 inches at the deck edge, 25 3/4 inches at the backrest end | 30 x 60 inches | Reclining, no seat | The lowest Ella tub; check the backrest end against a sill |
| LayDown72 | Just over 21 inches at the deck edge, 27 7/8 inches at the backrest end | 32 x 72 inches | Reclining, no seat | The longer LayDown for bathers over six feet |
| Petite | 35 inches | 27.5 x 52 inches | Seated | The narrowest 52 inch tub, sold as a 28 inch tub |
| Elite | 35 inches | 30 x 52 inches | Seated | The common 30 by 52 alcove footprint |
| Royal | 35 inches | not listed | Seated | Same height and seat-to-overflow depth as the Elite |
| Ultimate | 35 3/4 inches | 30 x 60 inches | Seated | Under 36 inches by a quarter inch |
| Deluxe | 39 inches | not listed | Seated, deeper soak | Over 36 inches; the height buys a 19 inch seat-to-overflow depth |
| Lounger | 40 inches | 27 x 60 inches | Seated | The tallest height in the published range |
What the differences mean: if a window sill, countertop or fixture sits lower than about 36 inches off the floor at the tub location, the Petite, Elite, Royal and Ultimate are the seated tubs that clear it, and the LayDown tubs clear almost anything. The Deluxe and Lounger need more wall. For the LayDown tubs, the deck edge is 21 inches but the backrest end rises higher, so compare the backrest end figure with whatever sits at that end of the alcove.
Under 35 Inches Means a LayDown
Every seated Ella tub stands 35 inches or taller, so a request for a tub under 35 inches outside leads to the two LayDown models. They are a different way of bathing. You recline rather than sit, the door is positioned at the center of the long side, and the soaking depth is 15 inches, compared with about 11 inches in a standard bathtub. The video on this page introduces the 3272 and 3060 sizes and shows their interiors: the 32 by 72 tub has an interior soaking area 61 inches long and 28 inches wide and suits bathers over six feet tall, while the 30 by 60 tub has an interior soaking length of 53 inches and a width of 25 1/2 inches. Sizes, fit and how to measure for them are in Laid-Down Walk-In Tub Dimensions and Fit.
Height Is Not Soaking Depth
A lower tub is not automatically a shallower bath. Soaking depth on a seated tub is the distance from the top of the seat to the overflow, and on the 35 inch Elite, Petite and Royal it is roughly 15 1/2 inches, within a half inch of the 15 inch depth of the 21 inch LayDown. The Deluxe reaches 19 inches and the Big4One 22 inches, and the extra wall height on those tubs is where the deeper soak comes from. What Is Soaking Depth on a Walk-In Tub? explains how to compare the seat-to-overflow figure with your own seated shoulder height. If you are choosing a low tub because the bather is small or sits low, measure the bather seated and compare seat width as well, using the figures in How Wide, High and Deep Is a Walk-In Tub Seat and Backrest?.
How to Check Your Space
- Measure from the floor to the underside of any window sill, countertop, shelf or fixture along the wall where the tub will sit.
- Compare that figure with the outside height on the spec sheet of the tub you are considering: 35 inches for the Elite, Petite and Royal, 35 3/4 inches for the Ultimate, 21 inches at the deck edge for the LayDown tubs.
- For a LayDown, also compare the backrest end, 25 3/4 inches on the LayDown60 and 27 7/8 inches on the LayDown72, with whatever sits at that end.
- Do not plan on lowering the tub with the leveling legs. They level, they do not shorten.
- Confirm the current spec sheet figure with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 before you order, since heights for models not listed here are confirmed from their own spec sheets.
