No for the shower pan, yes for some of the pieces around it. An Ella white acrylic shower base is molded to its finished size and a contractor never cuts it; when none of the stock sizes fits, the base is ordered to your length and width instead, as Can shower pans be cut to size or ordered custom? explains. The fitting that happens on site is done around the pan: the plastic L-shaped filler piece can be trimmed, the cultured marble wall surround can be trimmed and cut to the alcove, and the exposed edges of the acrylic wall panels are finished with a factory bend or locally sourced trim rather than reshaped.
Which Pieces Are Cut on Site and Which Are Ordered to Size
The question usually comes up when an alcove is an inch or two off a stock size. The table sorts the Ella shower components by whether a contractor can take a saw to them, using the sizes published for each.
| Component | How it arrives | Cut on site? | How you get an exact fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard acrylic shower base | 30 by 60, 32 by 60 or 36 by 60 inches, left or right drain | No | Choose the stock footprint that matches the finished opening |
| Custom acrylic shower base | Rectangle up to 44 inches wide by 80 inches long, minimum 30 by 30 inches | No | Ordered to your measured length and width with a left, right or center drain |
| Wheelchair roll-in base | 30, 32 or 36 inches wide by 60 inches long, curb-less | No | Same three footprints as the standard bases, chosen to the opening |
| L-shaped filler piece | 8 inch wide plastic piece with brackets | Yes | Trimmed down if it is too large for the gap |
| Cultured marble travertine wall surround | Eight, six or four panel surrounds with factory finished edges | Yes | Edges trimmed and cut to the width and height of the alcove |
| White acrylic wall panels | 98 inches high, plain white; 98 by 60 inch back walls and 36 to 38 by 96 to 98 inch side walls | not listed | Exposed edges finished with a factory 2-inch bend on white CNC walls, requested at order time, or with locally sourced trim |
The pattern is consistent. Anything molded with a drain in it is ordered to size, and the pieces that close gaps or cover walls are the ones fitted by hand. For your bathroom that means the pan's width and length are settled before the order is placed, and any small adjustment happens in the filler piece, the wall surround and the trim, never in the base.
Why a Contractor Never Cuts the Pan
An Ella shower base, standard or custom, is finished acrylic. It is ready to use once installed, it does not need to be tiled over, and the length, the width and the drain position are all fixed when the pan is made. The base also carries the threshold, and on some shower models a molded seat, so nothing is formed, lined or grouted in your bathroom. Cutting an edge would remove the finished surface the whole design depends on, which is why the route to an odd space is a custom order rather than a saw.
Because the fit is decided at order time, a few details have to be right before the floor is opened up:
- Only rectangles are made. Bases with angled or curved edges are not offered.
- Custom bases run up to 44 inches wide by 80 inches long, with a minimum of 30 by 30 inches for either layout. The team has handled pans shorter than 60 inches, pans longer and wider than the standard sizes, and other footprints with a center drain. A 58 by 30 inch base with a center drain has been produced, and a 38 by 80 inch base with a left drain sits comfortably within the limits.
- The drain can be left, right or center, and on a custom base it sits at least 9 inches from each wall. A drain only 7 inches from the threshold edge is not possible, even on a custom base.
- Custom bases are made for three-wall alcoves and for corner installations, and the team asks which you have so the drain and edges are placed correctly. A custom base typically has a threshold of about 3 inches.
- Measure the finished opening, not the framing, and tell the team where the existing drain line sits in the floor so it can confirm which drain position matches your size.
What the Contractor Fits by Hand
The L-shaped filler piece is a plastic accessory that measures 8 inches wide and is designed to close a gap between a shower base and an adjoining wall or fixture. It comes with brackets for installation, and because it is plastic it can be trimmed down if the piece is too large for the space. It is the one Ella shower part made to absorb a small mismatch, and Shower Bases, Walls, and Filler Pieces covers how it is ordered.
The cultured marble travertine wall surround is the wall product that is cut to the room. The panels are made from natural quartz and granite composite with a gel coat surface and come as eight, six or four panel surrounds. They can be carried and installed by one person and glue over drywall, plaster, painted walls, cement board or even existing tile. Their edges are factory finished for seamless joining, and those edges can be trimmed and cut on site, which is how the surround is matched to the exact width and height of your alcove. Who installs acrylic shower walls and shower pans in my bathroom? walks through that part of the job.
The acrylic wall panels are handled differently. They come 98 inches high in a plain white finish, with 98 by 60 inch back walls and 36 to 38 by 96 to 98 inch side walls, and the three-piece systems are offered in white, CNC and digital print finishes. Both outside vertical edges arrive cut clean and finished, not wrapped or rolled, so they can be left exposed and sealed with silicone. Where an edge will show, the published options are a finish rather than a cut:
- White CNC walls can be made with a 2-inch bend along the exposed edge, but only if you request it when you order. The bend is formed at the manufacturing facility, not in the warehouse, so it cannot be added later, and bent panels ship lying flat, which changes how the freight is packed.
- Printed-design walls are not bent. A trim strip to suit them can be requested at order time, with availability confirmed per order.
- For a single bathroom, most installers buy a white trim or J-molding at a local home improvement store and caulk it to the panel edge.
Before ordering, sketch the alcove and mark which panel edges will be exposed. Edges that die into a tiled wall or a corner need no trim at all. How Shower Wall Edges Are Finished: 2-Inch Bends on White CNC Walls and Trim Options has the full decision list.
When the Wall Is Out of Plumb, Adjust the Framing
The installation video on this page shows how a three-piece low-threshold shower is fitted to a pocket that is not quite right, and the acrylic is never the part that changes. The installer dry-assembles the shower in a clean, dry, open space before moving it into the bathroom, which confirms that the correct panels and the correct drain location arrived, that nothing is damaged, and that the panels align when assembled. The video also recommends delaying demolition of the existing tub area until you are confident the unit is the correct size and condition, since nobody wants to be without a working bathroom while waiting on a replacement.
The framing pocket is then checked against the dimensions on the framing diagrams page of the installation instructions, and checked for square, plumb and level. The video notes that adjustments are more common than not. A plumb bob hung from the framing at the back wall shows whether the wall leans, and when it does, the fix is to shim the pan away from the wall or notch the stud. Slight variances affect how plumb the walls sit and how even the grout lines look, so the correction is made in the pocket, not by trimming the pan or the panels.
Who Does the Fitting
A local licensed contractor, usually a plumber or a remodeling contractor, carries the whole job: preparing the floor and plumbing so the base lands on the rough-in, setting the finished base, connecting its drain to the house line and finishing the walls above it. Ella's Bubbles manufactures the pieces to your dimensions and ships them finished, but it does not perform installations or send technicians. Ella's technical support guides your contractor for free with manuals and live video help, so questions that come up during the fit go to your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850. Labor is arranged and paid for between you and the contractor, as Who Installs a Shower Pan or Shower Base in My Bathroom? explains.
