What the Published Door Listings Say About Glass

Ella publishes two sliding shower doors. The Ella Duo 55 by 70 is a framed door with two panels of clear tempered glass about 1/4 inch thick. Both panels slide, the door is reversible for left or right opening, and the extended horizontal handle doubles as a towel bar. The Primo is the thick-glass frameless slider, published in 48 by 78 and 60 by 78 inch sizes, and the installation document for those sizes describes 5/16 inch glass. A standard-glass Primo is also listed at 60 by 72 inches.

None of the published sheets, drawings or listings for these doors describes a frosted, tinted or patterned glass version. This page cannot promise a special request either way. Glass and Frame Finishes Side by Side

Three things stand out. First, finish choice lives on the Duo. It is the only Ella glass door published in brushed nickel and black as well as chrome, and each finish has its own model number, which makes it easy to name the exact door on your order. Second, the Primo's appeal is the glass and the floor line and not a range of finishes. It has no bottom rail or track, only a flexible gasket along the bottom edge that expands about 3/8 of an inch to turn water back toward the drain, and it is published in chrome. Third, frosted glass appears only on walk-in tub doors, which are built into the tub and are a different product from a door you add to a shower stall.

Where Frosted Glass Does Appear in the Ella Lineup

If frosted glass on an Ella product caught your eye, the walk-in tub doors are where it is published. The inward-swing door tubs, which are the Elite, Petite, Royal, Deluxe, Ultimate and the two-seat Companion and Escape, use a custom crafted brushed stainless steel door with a frosted tempered glass panel. That door is removable, which is the intended way to clean behind and beneath it. The outward-swing U-shape family uses a door made of plastic (PVC) composite and tempered glass with a 3-latch gear and shaft mechanism, and the Tub4Two's outward door carries a tempered, frosted glass panel in a white composite frame.

Planning a Brushed Nickel or Black Bathroom

For a shower stall, the Duo is the piece that can follow your room. Choose the brushed nickel or black frame and the door matches the rest of your hardware. Every current Ella walk-in tub, LayDown tub, shower base and shower kit is white, the trim and fittings are chrome, and the faucet set is the one item you can order in another finish.

• Chrome only: grab bars, door handle and trim, drain openers and covers, jet trim, push buttons, the towel bar and the 4-fold screen frame, which is chrome ionized aluminum.
• Faucet choices: chrome is standard, brushed nickel is offered on the 2-piece set, and the waterfall wall faucet comes in chrome, brushed nickel or matte black as availability allows.
• Not made: oil-rubbed bronze or polished brass for jets or grab bars.

Because the tub trim stays chrome, most customers keep chrome on the faucet for a uniform look. If your heart is set on brushed nickel, the usual approach is a brushed nickel faucet with chrome elsewhere. What to Confirm Before You Order, and How to Keep the Glass Clear

• The opening. The Duo is built for the 55 3/4 inch inside opening of Ella's 60 inch wide one-piece and three-piece shower stalls. Its drawing measures 55 1/4 inches wide by 71 inches high, and it is fitted after the stall is assembled and sealed.
• The Primo's adjustment range. The manual gives a wall-to-wall adjustment of 46.02 to 48 inches for the 48 inch door and 58.03 to 60 inches for the 60 inch door, both 78 inches high. The door is supplied without a tray, the wall plugs in the pack are for solid walls so stud or partition walls need separate fixings, and it is heavy enough to need two people.
• The finish by model number. Name S5570C for chrome, S5570BN for brushed nickel or S5570B for black, and confirm current availability with your Ella dealer.
• The warranty on the door. The Duo sheet prints a 2 year limited warranty.

Clear glass shows water spots more readily than frosted glass, so gentle, regular care keeps it looking its best. Ella's published glass care instructions, written for the 4-fold screen and the LayDown glass screen, call for a soft lint-free cloth and warm soapy water followed by a rinse with clean water, and they rule out abrasive or strong cleaning solutions such as alcohol, petroleum liquids or any other chemical cleaner. In hard water areas the instructions ask you to clean the glass with soap and water after each use, because insoluble lime salts can deposit on the glass and build up over time.
