Which walk-in tub is best for daily soaking and hydrotherapy?

For daily soaking and hydrotherapy, the therapy package matters more than the model name: order the tub with a hydro massage package, because every Ella hydro package includes the in-line water heater that holds your bath temperature while the jets run, and that heater is not offered on soaking or air-only tubs. Once the package is settled, choose the model by its published soaking depth and by the space your bathroom allows. Which Ella walk-in tubs offer quick fill, auto heat and programmable cycles? explains the features behind a daily routine, and this page turns them into a model decision.

Start with the Hydro Package, Not the Model

An Ella walk-in tub does not store or heat its own water. It fills fresh for every bath through a deck-mounted fast-fill faucet and drains completely afterward, so there is nothing to sanitize, balance or test between baths, which is exactly what makes a daily soak practical. The water comes from your home water heater, so the starting temperature and the pace of the fill depend on that heater's capacity and recovery. If you plan to bathe every day, water heater sizing deserves more attention than it would with a hot tub.

The in-line water heater is the feature that makes a long hydrotherapy session comfortable, and it works one way. It maintains the temperature of the hot water you filled with. It does not heat a cold fill and cannot raise a lukewarm one. It has no switch of its own and comes on automatically whenever the hydro pump runs, so while the jets are working the circulating water is held steady. With the hydro off, the water cools like any other bath. Because the heater comes only with hydro packages and cannot be added to a soaking or air-only tub, a bather who wants warm daily hydrotherapy should order hydro from the start.

The current Ultra spec sheet lists four packages, and they show the range of hydro combinations Ella builds:

  • Hydro: water jets with the in-line heater, an intensity dial and calf jets.
  • Air plus Hydro: adds three-speed air massage with auto purge, the automatic cycle that clears the air lines after the bath.
  • Hydro plus Hydro Foot: adds the independent foot massage, which runs on its own dedicated pump.
  • Hydro plus Micro: pairs the hydro jets with the microbubble system.

If you want a warm soak without jets, soaking tubs are available in 30x52 and 28x52 inch sizes, and the Transfer 60 can come with no jets. One soaker model includes a heated back. Keep in mind that a no-jet tub has no hydro pump and therefore no in-line heater, so the water cools at the pace of any ordinary bath.

Soaking Depth Is the Figure to Compare

The video on this page shows how soaking depth is measured. Three factors determine it: the interior length of the tub, the length of the seat, and the depth from the top of the seat to the center of the overflow drains. Your own size then determines how deep the water sits on you, so a taller or shorter bather will experience the same tub differently. Keep those three figures in mind as you compare models.

The Ultra is the model with a complete published set of these figures. Its product tour in Ultra, Standard, Flow and S-Class on Video gives a 17 1/2 inch soaking depth measured from the top of the seat to the center of the overflow, a 19 inch seat length for leg support, 42 inches of interior length and 24 inches of shoulder width, on an ADA compliant 17 inch seat height. The current spec sheet adds a 22 inch seat width and 75 gallons unoccupied. When you compare another model, ask for the same three measurements from its spec sheet rather than the exterior length alone, because a longer tub with a longer seat does not always soak deeper.

Models Compared for a Daily Soak

Model or optionPublished size and figuresWhat it means for daily use
UltraActual size 29 1/2 by 52 1/8 by 40 inches; 75 gallons unoccupied; 17 1/2 inch soaking depth; packages Air plus Hydro, Hydro plus Hydro Foot, Hydro plus Micro, HydroFull hydro choice with in-line heater, intensity dial and calf jets; 7 inch extension panel fits a 60 inch alcove
Transfer 6030x60 inches; wheelchair accessible; can come with no jets; dual 4-port 2-inch drains; soaking depth not listedDoor opens directly to the seat for the easiest entry; confirm a hydro package is ordered if you want the heater
Tub for Two36x80 inches or 32x60 inches; double-seated jet feature; soaking depth not listedTwo bathers sharing a jetted soak
Soaking tubs30x52 and 28x52 inches; no jets; soaking depth not listedA plain warm soak with no pump and no in-line heater
30x55 inch tub with extension panel30x55 inches plus extension panel; soaking depth not listedFits a smaller bathroom while leaving swing room for the door

What these differences mean is simple. The Ultra is the only model in this set with a published soaking depth and a published package list, so it is the easiest tub to evaluate for a daily hydrotherapy routine. The Transfer 60 wins on entry, since its door opens straight onto the seat, but it must be ordered with jets to get the hydro heater. The Tub for Two answers a different need, two bathers at once, and the soaking tubs suit someone who wants warm water and nothing more. The 30x55 inch option exists for rooms where a 60 inch tub would leave no room to swing the door.

Features That Make a Daily Routine Easy

Safety basics are not a deciding factor, because they are standard across the line, as How Do I Choose a Walk-In Tub With a Low Threshold and Slip-Resistant Floor? explains. Every walk-in model has a low step-in threshold and a textured, slip-resistant floor. Most models seat you at 17 inches, similar to a standard chair, on a molded seat that is not adjustable. Deck and wall-mounted grab bars are placed for entry and exit, and the fast-fill faucet includes an extendable hand shower so you can rinse while seated. A heated seat and backrest is optional, as is the choice of easy-touch or digital controls.

Door style is the one daily-use decision that changes with the model. The standard door swings inward. The Transfer tub is the only model with a large out-swing door, and the U-shape out-swing door tubs are the other option for easy access. Think about how much clear floor space you have in front of the tub before you settle on either. The whole lineup, including the two-person and inward-swing options, is summarized in Walk-in Tub Models and Sizes: Soakers, Transfer, Two-Person, and Inswing Options.

Emptying is part of the same routine. The Transfer models use Technologie double vidange with dual 4-port 2-inch drains that connect directly to the home drain for fast, gravity-driven draining, and the gravity Dual Drain on other models empties the tub the same way. The Ultra spec sheet lists two 2 inch four-port drains. On air packages, the Auto Purge cycle runs on its own after the bath to clear the air lines, so there is nothing to remember.

How to Decide

  1. Decide whether you want hydrotherapy or a plain soak. Only a hydro package brings the in-line heater.
  2. Choose the package: hydro alone, or hydro with air, independent foot massage or microbubble.
  3. Compare soaking depth using the three figures from the video, seat length, interior length and seat-to-overflow depth, for each model you are considering.
  4. Measure the room, including the floor in front of the tub for the door swing, and check whether an extension panel is needed to fill the alcove.
  5. Check your water heater's capacity and recovery, since every bath fills fresh from it.
  6. Confirm the model and package with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850.

Questions fréquentes

Does a soaking tub keep the water warm during a long bath?
No. The in-line water heater comes only with hydro massage packages and runs whenever the hydro pump runs. It is not on soaking or air-only tubs and cannot be added to those configurations, so a soaking tub cools like any ordinary bath.
Can I get hydrotherapy in a wheelchair accessible walk-in tub?
The Transfer 60 is a 30x60 inch wheelchair accessible tub whose door opens directly to the seat. It can come with no jets, so confirm that a hydro package is on your order if you want the jets and the in-line heater. Transfer models also use Technologie double vidange for fast gravity draining.
How do I measure soaking depth when comparing models?
Three factors determine it: the interior length of the tub, the length of the seat, and the depth from the top of the seat to the center of the overflow drains. The video on this page shows each measurement. Your own size then determines how deep the water sits on you.
Does a walk-in tub store water like a hot tub?
No. The tub fills fresh for every bath from your home water heater through the fast-fill faucet and drains completely afterward. There are no chemicals, no filter cartridge and no standing water to manage between daily baths.
Which Ella walk-in tub gives the deepest soak?
Among the models on this page, only the Ultra has a published soaking depth, 17 1/2 inches from the top of the seat to the center of the overflow. For any other model, ask for the seat length, interior length and seat-to-overflow depth from its current spec sheet and compare those three figures.
Do daily baths need a larger home water heater?
Every bath fills from your home water heater, so the starting temperature and the pace of the fill depend on that heater's capacity and recovery. The in-line heater only maintains the warmth you filled with. Your installer can advise whether your current heater keeps up with a daily routine.
