What is the difference between gel coat and AcrylX Ella shower finishes?

Gel coat and AcrylX are two different surface layers, and both are laid over a fiberglass shell. Gel coat is the finish on Ella's legacy ESM series one-piece stalls and on the low-threshold gel coat multi-piece showers, and the documents for those units print a 3 year limited warranty. AcrylX is the long lasting applied acrylic finish on the current made-in-the-USA shower stalls, multi-piece kits and barrier-free roll-in bases. The AcrylX one-piece stalls print a Lifetime Limited Residential Warranty and a 30-Year Commercial Warranty. Two Finishes over the Same Kind of Shell

The two generations have more in common than the names suggest. Both are fiberglass units, and in both the fiberglass gives the shower its shape and strength. The difference is the layer you see, touch and clean.

On the older units, that layer is gel coat. Ella's documents describe the ESM series one-piece stalls and the low-threshold gel coat multi-piece showers as a gel coat finish over fiberglass. The product pages and care documents call them the older gel coat units.

On the current units, that layer is AcrylX. AcrylX is acrylic. It is an acrylic finish applied over a fiberglass-reinforced shell rather than a stand-alone acrylic sheet, and the AcrylX layer is the bathing surface. Behind it, the stalls and kits have Armorcore reinforced walls on all sides, so grab bars and seats can be mounted anywhere on the wall. That matters when a bather's needs change after the shower is installed.

Ella's published documents do not draw a line between AcrylX and other acrylic surfaces. The comparison they do draw is between the AcrylX units and the gel coat units that came before them. If you are choosing between an Ella shower described as acrylic and one described as AcrylX, you are choosing between acrylic surfaces. The real difference is between AcrylX and gel coat.

Gel Coat and AcrylX Products Side by Side

Every figure in this table appears in a published Ella document. Where no figure is printed, the cell says not listed.

The pattern in the table follows the finish, not the size or the piece count. A one-piece stall and a multi-piece shower in gel coat print the same 3 year term. The AcrylX with Armorcore one-piece stalls print the lifetime residential and 30-year commercial pair. When you compare an older Ella shower with a current one, the finish name on the document tells you which warranty applies.

What the Warranty Gap Means in Practice

The printed warranty is the clearest practical difference between the two generations. A 3 year limited warranty on the gel coat units is much shorter than a Lifetime Limited Residential Warranty on the AcrylX one-piece stalls. The 30-Year Commercial Warranty also covers the AcrylX stalls in a facility rather than a home.

Two cautions keep this accurate:

• Not every AcrylX product prints the lifetime term. The lifetime and 30-year pair is printed for the AcrylX with Armorcore one-piece stalls. The published pages gathered for the knowledge base do not print a term for the three-piece molded seat kit or the roll-in bases. The finish name alone does not settle the warranty for those products.
• The document packed with your unit is the source for its term. Your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 can confirm the term from your model number.

Gel Coat Is Also the Surface on Cultured Marble

Gel coat on an Ella page does not always mean a legacy ESM stall. Ella's cultured marble products use a gel coat surface as well, and they are a separate family from the fiberglass stalls.

The first video below presents the cultured marble shower bases. They are molded solid cultured marble with a glossy gel coat finish and an ADA compliant slip-resistant textured floor, they come in three sizes, and they are heavy enough to need at least two people to install. The second video presents the cultured marble travertine wall surrounds. These panels are a natural quartz and granite composite with a gel coat surface, offered as eight, six or four panel surrounds. They can be glued over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or existing tiles. Their edges are factory finished, and they can be trimmed for a custom fit.

When you see gel coat in a product description, check what is underneath it. Gel coat over fiberglass on an ESM stall or a low-threshold multi-piece shower is the legacy stall finish with the 3 year printed term. Gel coat over cultured marble is the glossy face of a stone-look base or surround, and its warranty term is not listed in the published pages. Confirm that term for your product.

Living with Either Finish in Your Bathroom

Which generation is current. The current specification manual, dated July 2022, documents the New Construction One-Piece Shower in the AcrylX construction, models E-3648LWH and E-3648RWH, handed by seat. No gel coat stall appears in that manual series, which is why the knowledge base calls the ESM line legacy. The documents do not print a discontinuation date. Accessories later on. On an AcrylX stall or kit, Armorcore reinforced walls on all sides mean a grab bar or a seat can go anywhere on the wall. You are not limited to the positions chosen on installation day.

Cleaning. Every Ella care document has the same rule, which is no abrasives. Clean with warm water and liquid detergent, or with a non-abrasive cleanser made for fiberglass bathroom fixtures. Never use scouring powders, scouring pads or steel wool. Ella's care instructions treat AcrylX exactly like any acrylic fixture, so an AcrylX surface needs no special product.
