Can I Order the Capri With a Left Drain and a Left Outswing Door?

Not as a same-side combination. On every Ella walk-in tub the door and the drains sit on opposite sides, so a Capri ordered with a left outward-swing door has its drains and faucet deck at the right end. The good news is that a house drain on the left can still work with a left door, as explained in Can I Order a Left-Side Door With Right-Side Plumbing?, because the Capri's 4-port drains accept the drain pipe from either direction.

Why the Door and the Drains Cannot Share a Side

The Capri is built in two versions, a left-hand tub and a right-hand tub. Sides are always taken as you face the tub, ready to step in. On a left-hand Capri the door and the seat are on your left, and the drains and the factory-drilled faucet deck are at the right end. A right-hand Capri is the mirror image, with the door and seat on the right and the drains on the left.

The reason is the layout of the tub itself. The door sits over the seat, and the drains and the faucet deck sit at the other end. There is no version that places the door and the drains together, so a left drain with a left door is not a build you can request. The hand is marked with an L or an R at the end of the SKU, and What Is Door Side (Left-Hand vs Right-Hand) on a Walk-In Tub? shows how to read it.

It also helps to be clear about the words. Some people say left drain when they mean the house drain in the floor, and others mean the drain end of the tub. The tub's own drains are fixed opposite the door. The house drain is the part that has some flexibility, and that is where the Capri's drain design helps.

What a Left-Hand Capri Looks Like in Your Bathroom

The spec sheet lists the Capri at an actual size of 30 inches wide by 52 inches long by 40 inches high, with a 20 inch seat. Left and right tubs share the same measurements mirrored, so choosing the left door never changes the footprint. Only the swing side changes.

  • Door. The plastic composite and tempered glass door swings outward on a 3 latch gear and shaft mechanism. It opens 165 degrees, so allow about 21 inches of clear floor in front of it.
  • Seat. The seat sits under the door, on the left end of a left-hand tub.
  • Drains and faucet. The two 2 inch drains, their overflows and the 5-piece fast-fill faucet sit at the right end.
  • Panels. The Capri includes an 8 inch extension panel and one reversible end panel for 60 inch alcoves, plus a removable front apron with two access panels.

The full list of sizes, packages and features is in the Ella Capri 30x52 profile.

If Your House Drain Is on the Left and You Want the Left Door

This is the situation most people are really asking about, and it is workable. The house drain does not have to dictate the hand of the tub. The Capri comes with the Ella 2 inch T-type dual port floor drain, which the spec sheet describes this way:

  • Two 2 inch independent floor drains, with 2 end caps included.
  • Four 2 inch drain ports that allow the drain pipe to be installed in either direction, with caps on the unused port.
  • The house drain can connect to either or both ports.
  • Reducers can be used for smaller pipes. PVC connections are not included, so your plumber supplies them.

There is roughly 3 inches of clearance beneath the frame, enough for a 2 inch PVC line. That lets your plumber run the drain line under the tub from the drain end on the right back to a house drain on the left. Installers often move the supply and drain lines to the side that gives the best access and the right door swing for the room.

One caution applies in a three-wall alcove. The side walls are closed off once the tub is in, so choose the arrangement that keeps the drain connections reachable through the front of the tub. Your licensed installer should confirm the connection plan before your order is placed. Ella does not send technicians, so this work belongs to your local plumber.

Or Match the Hand to the Drain with a Right-Hand Capri

If you would rather keep the plumbing run as short as possible, the simple match is to put the door on the side opposite the house drain. With the house drain on the left, that is a right-hand Capri, with the door and seat on the right and the tub drains directly at the left end. Should My Walk-In Tub Door Be on the Left or Right Side? walks through that choice.

Whichever hand you choose, check the floor in front of the door side. The Capri's outward door needs about 21 inches of clearance in front. Whether it passes over a nearby toilet depends on the toilet's height and how far it sits from the tub, so measure before deciding. If the clear floor in front of the door side is under 21 inches, an inward-swing model is the safer fit. The bathroom layout planning guide covers toilets, corners and which sides can be left open.

How to Get the Hand Right on Your Order

  1. Stand where you will approach the tub and note which side the house drain is on.
  2. Decide which side you want the door and seat on, and check the door swing against the toilet and vanity on that side.
  3. Tell your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 which hand you need in plain words, for example a left-side door with right-side drains.
  4. Share the Capri spec sheet with your installer so the drain positions are known before delivery.
  5. Read the item description on the final invoice before you approve it. It states the hand of the tub.

Take your time with this step. The hand is set at the factory and cannot be reversed after delivery, and the tub is built with the door on the side you order.

Questions fréquentes

Can the Capri door and drains be on the same side?
No. The door and the drains sit on opposite sides of every Ella walk-in tub. A left-side door Capri has its drains on the right, and a right-side door Capri has its drains on the left, with sides taken as you face the tub.
Can a left-door Capri connect to a house drain on the left?
Yes, with the drain line run under the tub. The Capri's four 2 inch drain ports allow the drain pipe to be installed in either direction, and there is roughly 3 inches of clearance beneath the frame for a 2 inch PVC line. Your licensed installer should confirm the connection plan.
Can the Capri door side be switched after the tub is delivered?
No. The hand is set at the factory and cannot be reversed after delivery. Confirm the orientation with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 and read the item description on your final invoice before you approve it.
How much floor space does the Capri outward door need?
The Capri's door swings outward 165 degrees. Allow about 21 inches of clear floor in front of it. If the clear floor in front of the door side is under 21 inches, an inward-swing model is the safer fit.
Does choosing a left or right door change the Capri's size?
No. Left and right tubs share the same measurements mirrored, so only the swing side changes. The Capri's actual size is 30 inches wide by 52 inches long by 40 inches high in both versions.
Are the drain pipe fittings included with the Capri?
The Capri includes two 2 inch 4-port PVC drains with 2 end caps and 2 overflows. PVC connections are not included, so your plumber supplies them. Reducers can be used for smaller pipes.
