What Does ADA Stand For?
ADA is an acronym that stands for The Americans With Disabilities Act. When it was passed in the 1990s it imposed strict building codes that apply to differing areas. One such area is the bathroom. In order for a shower to be ADA compliant it needs to follow several regulations to ensure the safety of the bather.
The ADA Shower
An ADA transfer shower needs to have at least a 36 inch wide entry. An ADA roll-in shower needs a minimum of a 60 inch entry.
The ADA Shower Seat
An ADA shower seat must be 17 to 19 inches from the floor.
The ADA Shower Grab Bars
An ADA shower grab bars must be mounted 34 to 38 inches from the floor and the handles should not be further than 1.5 inches away from the wall. Their diameter must be between 1.25 and 1.5 inches.
